The KeyTones choir began life as The Nurses Choir of Victoria in February 1997, at the Melbourne City Mission Chapel in Fitzroy North. Our membership has now expanded to around 50 choristers from a wide variety of professions.
We are a non-auditioned choir, so musical experience is helpful but not assumed. While the emphasis is on enjoying the experience of singing in a group, our choir has attained a significant level of professionalism in recent years. We perform complex classical and contemporary works, including in languages other than English, and we perform without music.
The KeyTones have performed interstate including at the Festival of Voices in Hobart (2009, 2012 and 2018) and in the combined choirs as part of John Rutter’s Mass of the Children at the Sydney Opera House in July 2011. The choir has been the subject of two documentaries: ‘Something to Sing About’, which screened on Foxtel Digital and Channel 31 in 2006 and more recently, the 2014 Dumbo Feather-produced ‘The Joy of Singing’. The choir also featured in the 2016 Malthouse Theatre production of The Events and the 2022 MTC production The Heartbreak Choir. Watch our MD Jane Murone and choristers talk about their experiences in The Heartbreak Choir in this short video: A Celebration of Song.
We have regular performance commitments in and around Melbourne including the annual Nurses Memorial Centre Anzac Day Commemorative Service and our own end of year concert.
